day 1b
well, somehow i forgot about my own decision to write about work related issues only in english. how could this happen? :-o
the evening started (btw. lunch was great due to my lactose medicine :-) with a talk/presentation of the tptp project. for some reason i really couldn’t follow the talk. This was obviously caused by the presenters skills. This sound probably arrogant and i’m pretty sure that my personal skills are very limited too, but an english presentation is always so much better if held by a native speaker. And besides the language barrier some developers even need to learn the basics of a presentation. So, even though i believe tptp is definitely worth looking into, it couldn’t score today.
The next presentation on the “main stage” was about dtp. Working for a database vendor, my interest in the dtp is very high. The talk was informative and graham is a good speaker. The downside is, that dtp is still missing an oodbms meta model. The meta model is the component on which most parts of dtp are build upon. It currently offers just a rdbms meta model. Naturally the reason for this lies in the list of vendors participating in the dtp and the popularity of rdbms. It’s mostly steered by relational db vendors too. This limitation makes it very hard for a small company like versant to exploit dtp. We would have to implement a complete meta model before we can get anything out of the dtp. i’m not sure versant has the resources to do so. maybe it’s possible to implement an oda layer on top of our pure managed client (jdo) to be able to get a least the basic functionality with an oodbms covered.
The following members update was held in a very familiar atmosphere. Much to the fact that only a hand full of people attended the meeting. Anyways, it’s been nice to hear about the development of the eclipse foundation and the eclipse ecosystem from mike and donald, because the news are all excellent. Eclipse is doing really great, even in areas in which nobody excepted eclipse to succeed (mobile/embedded market).
Receptition was mainly a chat with martin and another guy i cannot remember the name of (sorry). Martin and the other guy started to discuss about aspect weaving in osgi and i listened at the beginning. When things turned to the bundle lifecycle management i felt save enough to share my thoughts. Later we drifted into smalltalk about various things like (ibm) notebooks, women in computer science and student discounts for software product. ;)
The bof (bird of feathers) dealt with the usage of markup language for rcp development. quite interesting idea even though some people don’t agree with the idea. The realisation of the idea itself and the prototype provided look promising, but the areas for which a xml+java script definition of a rcp app might be useful for are still discussable. I haven’t had the energy to stay until the end of the bof and went back to the hotel soon after.
It’s still a little bit inconvenient to have a hotel on the other side of town. I guess i have to do the reservation myself the next time (no offence stefanie ;-).
Overall i’m looking forward on the second day of the summit.
